The Art of Darkness* →
Art critic Holland Cotter asks important questions in his article about contemporary art in Africa, “Out of Adversity, Visions of Life” in the New York Times. (*My post title may be pushing the bound of propriety, but I love the book and the wordplay. Plus, um, read the article.) What, for example, does the “African” in African contemporary art mean, if anything? Is African, as a...

Going to the Fundació Miró in Barcelona a few years back significantly deepened my appreciation for Miró, a former accountant! And seeing this painting, Or de l’azur, remains a highlight of my lifetime. ...

Art Everyday! →
This month, the GOOD Magazine 30 Days of GOOD challenge is “Art Every Day”. I like to think this challenge is something I try to do already. But owing to my special fondness for somewhat arbitrary rules and contests, I set out on this quest to actively and purposely incorporate art into my life everyday for the month of March! Hopefully, you feel inspired to do the same. (And,...

Dear George, →
My friend Cole and his company, Heygood Images Productions, have written an open letter to George Lucas about the upcoming film Red Tails (in theaters Friday, January 20). The film, produced by Lucas, tells the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first all-black aerial combat unit during WW2. Cole’s letter thanks Lucas for his vision and determination in making the movie and bringing it to...
