Nearly all my paintings are based on photographs I have taken, primarily of Southern California scenes, over the years. Though it was never my intention to depict nostalgic scenes, many of the images I have painted have disappeared or been radically altered in the ever-changing landscape that is Southern California. Thus nostalgia is thrust upon the works. But what I am really after is bearing witness, and making people stop what they’re doing and pay attention, to something they may have never seen before, but that makes them feel “I know this.” -Michael Ward

I’m adoring Nick Knight’s Melting Flora paintings at the moment. Truly gorgeous. It’s hard for me usually to find contemporary artists I really like but Knight (along with Aurel Schmidt) has become one of my favorites at the moment.

From the department of fun facts comes news that Picasso painted with house paint.
New York Times:

It was common house paint, said Volker Rose, a physicist at the Argonne National Laboratory who led the study, published in Applied Physics A: Materials Science & Processing.
“We were looking into pigments taken from Picasso’s white paint, which from a material perspective is zinc oxide, and we were able to study the impurities that are there,” Dr. Rose said.

(the mural pictured is still kickin’)
